Sculpture and me

The urge to sculpt was always there, buried deep, waiting for its moment. Then one day all that dormant creativity resurfaced, and could at last find expression and take shape.
The harsh winters of Romania, where I lived for eighteen years, gave me snow and ice as the material for my first artistic attempts. That is how I discovered the pleasure of inventing and playing with forms.
Today I devote myself mostly to modeling clay: most of the sculptures shown here are terracotta, finished with a range of patinas.
Between the abstract and the semi-figurative, my sculptures take stylized forms that play with lines and curves, mixing intention and chance.
When inspiration comes, a journey into the unknown begins. With no precise idea of the final form, I give free rein to the spontaneous gesture. I like to keep the traces of each stage, as a memory of the path that led there.
The image of woman is everywhere in the arts, and it is the source I most often draw on for the subjects of my sculptures. In them she takes stylized, sometimes deliberately exaggerated forms, where bold lines and rounded volumes mingle in search of balance.
Whether a piece is carefully finished or seemingly left unfinished, I hope to share the pleasure of letting a spontaneous gesture lead to an unexpected result.
